Sudanese Refugee Crisis
Southwark Stands Together Response
7 June 2023 at St Giles Church in Camberwell
SRCF organised this meeting to bring together asylum seekers from Sudan with stakeholders from various agencies. More than forty people from Sudan attended. Advice and information were exchanged with:
Jasmine Ali, Southwark Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Refugees
Sally Causer and Madeleine Kelleher from the Southwark Law Centre
Pauline Nandoo and Craig from the Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers
Gargie Ahmad from the Council's health team
Kym Goh from Citizens Advice Southwark
Eltayeb Hassan from SRCF acted as an English/Arabic interpreter throughout the meeting.
Audience members shared their experience of living in Southwark and the Home Office's asylum process. Madeleine Kelleher gave specific details on that process and their right to work. Some spoke of their fear for family and friends in Sudan, and the frustrations of finding ways to help.
